First aid for parents and grandparents

Updated 2026-08-21 · First Aid Training Hornsby

If nobody is asking you for a certificate, you get to choose based on what you want to be able to do. Most parents and grandparents book HLTAID011 Provide First Aid for a full certificate, or HLTAID009 CPR if they specifically want CPR and choking response and not much else.

Choosing without a workplace requirement

HLTAID009 CPR is 1.5 hours and covers CPR on adults, children and infants, choking, and defibrillator use. It is the shortest way to learn the things most likely to matter in an emergency at home.

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is 3 hours, includes that CPR content, and adds bleeding, burns, fractures, allergic reactions, asthma and the wider medical emergencies. If you want one certificate that covers most situations, this is it.

HLTAID012 exists for education and care settings and puts more emphasis on infants and children. Parents sometimes choose it for that reason, though it is not required of anyone who is not working in that sector.

It is a real qualification, not a short talk

These are nationally recognised units, which means the practical skills are assessed rather than demonstrated at you. That is why there is always a face-to-face session and why you cannot complete it entirely online.

It also means the statement of attainment is genuinely useful later — if you go on to a role that requires first aid, you already hold it.

What the day involves

A short online component in your own time, then one practical session at Miller Noyce House, Suite 2, Level 2, 45–47 Hunter Street in central Hornsby — a short walk from the station. The certificate is issued the same day.

You will need a Unique Student Identifier before it can be issued. It is free, takes a few minutes, and it is a one-off.

Coming as a couple or a family

Grandparents and parents often book together. If there are several of you, mention it when you enquire and we will get you into the same session.

Common questions

Which course should a grandparent do?

HLTAID009 CPR if you mainly want CPR and choking response, or HLTAID011 Provide First Aid for a full certificate. Neither is a requirement — it is a question of how much you want to cover.

Is there an age limit?

There is no upper age limit. The practical component involves kneeling to perform CPR on a manikin, so let us know in advance if that is difficult and we will discuss options.

Do I need a USI even if it is not for work?

Yes. A Unique Student Identifier is required before any nationally recognised certificate can be issued, regardless of why you are doing the course.
